Risk-Aware Autonomous Port Inspection - RAPID

Project Title: Risk-Aware Autonomous Port Inspection (Rapid)
Funding body: EU H2020
Duration: 36 M (01/07/2020-30/06/2023)
Coordintaor: University of the West Scotland, UK
Partners: Here
UL Team: Gerard Dooly PI, Petar Trslic, Matheus Santos PhD, Mahammad Irfan PhD

The RAPID project will combine and extend drone technology to deliver a fully automated and safety-assured maintenance inspection service for bridges, ship hull surveys, and more. Specifically, the service will combine self-sailing unmanned surface vehicles with autonomous unmanned aerial systems. The aim is to reduce the time and cost of structural condition monitoring of maritime transport infrastructures such as material-handling equipment, cargo and passenger ships, and bridges. RAPID’s new system will also facilitate the prioritisation of safer transport infrastructure..

UL will lead work package 3 - UAS Flight Control, collaborating with UWS, FRAUNHOFER, and THALES in the completion of six deliverables. Within WP3, UL will develop perception systems for UAS including UAS tracking systems, SLAM, and Sense & avoid. Computer vision and control system development for autonomous landing to USV will be developed by UL in work package 4 and will allow for extension of UAS operations from USV platform. UL are utilising SLAM systems developed in WP3 within WP5 to allow for Live generation of 3D models which will be utilised for ML analysis.
