Remote Presence is a feature developed in the Marine & Mobile Robotics Research Centre (MMRRC) at the University of Limerick under the MaREI project. The feature enables ROV pilots to operate ROVs remotely from anywhere. Remote Presence is also used in the OceanRINGS project and can be used for inspections of energy farms, whether renewable or oil & gas based, as the videos below demonstrate.
Remote Presence - MaREI demo from MMRRC UL.
Remote Presence can be used in a variety of fields: archaeology, biology, renewable energy, oil & gas industry, tourism, coastal surveys and many more. As long as the pilot and the ROVs are connected to internet, the pilot can operate ROVs one after another without spending the time to travel to a different location for each survey. One of the main foci of the MMRRC research is renewable marine energy and the Remote Presence platform is of great benefit because it allows regular inspections of the renewable energy farms and huge cost savings as there is no need to mobilise a ship for every inspection or survey.
